Radiological Physician Associates Selects Neurostar VRN for Multi-Site Reading
Contact:
Radiological Physician Associates (RPA) ( Fairmont, WV ) has selected Neurostar’s Virtual Radiology Network (VRN) for the management and communication of images for its busy radiology reading group serving 19 sites. According to Samuel J. Merandi, RPA Administrative Vice President, a key goal was to implement a system enabling image access and management at multiple locations that was offered as a managed services model with built-in IT support.
“At the time of the purchase, we had been using a PACS from another vendor for several years. This provided us with insight about what we could do better the second time around,” Merandi explained. “In particular, we had implemented numerous upgrades on the software, which ran our onsite server, and we wanted to eliminate the need for this." RPA was facing yet an additional costly upgrade when it started looking for another PACS.
Before deciding on Neurostar, the radiology group considered a full range of options through a process that involved both site visits and product demonstrations. Along with meeting the practice’s initial goals, Neurostar offered additional benefits. These included fee-per-study pricing that allows an unlimited number of users for one all-inclusive fee, streamlined communications with referring physicians and easy and cost-effective addition of new reading and imaging sites. Neurostar also brings added value to RPA’s client facilities by offering off-site disaster recovery, business continuity and complete managed-services PACS.
RPA serves seven hospitals and 12 diverse outpatient locations, from freestanding centers to correctional facilities. Through Neurostar, the RPA physicians read 70,000 studies annually in a full range of modalities except mammography.
"Other vendors didn’t have the architecture and vision to support reading for a large number site," said Merandi. “We also liked Neurostar’s ability to add value to our clients. Some of our hospitals are already on their way to the second generation of PACS. Others have yet to install their first. Neurostar offers attractive options for both. We really believe virtual radiology is the way of the future.”
The VRN also provides a range of special features and functionalities that streamline reading across multiple sites. This includes consolidation of studies into a single offsite Neurostar-managed platform that serves as focal point for integrated image management. Studies are sent using the Internet to the platform and once onsite are directed for reading to the appropriate radiologist, wherever located. This eliminates the need to install and fund proprietary network connections. A worklist for each RPA physician, integrating studies across all acquisition sites, speeds workflow.
“A major benefit is that the VRN is a fully managed solution that complements and backs-up our internal IT support,” said Merandi. Software upgrades are managed by Neurostar staff and implemented automatically at no cost to users. As the practice grows, it plans to add connectivity for new sites through Neurostar.
“RPA is exactly the kind of dynamic and growing organization that Neurostar’s VRN was developed to support,” commented Willie Tillery , Neurostar CEO. “We are pleased to partner with this ambitious medical practice.”
About Neurostar Solutions
The next step beyond PACS, Neurostar Solutions’ innovative technology is designed to power virtual radiology networks and is the leading platform for outsourcing radiology services. The unique Web-based image management solution provides secure, reliable and efficient image communication over the Internet to authorized users independent of their location. Its innovative architecture and universal workflow enable imaging centers, hospitals, and physicians’ offices to share image data with a virtual community of radiologists and referring physicians, helping them expand services, productivity and referrals.
The Virtual Radiology Network (VRN) pulls images from existing imaging modalities and PACS at multiple locations through an integrated network of on- and off-site servers and makes them available to any authorized user through integrated Worklists, streamlining image access and management. For sites that do not have a PACS, the VRN provides an affordable and easy-to-implement alternative to a traditional PACS.
Neurostar’s cost-effective, Web-based imaging solution helps practices ensure reading by designated radiologists, wherever located, in a timely fashion. It addresses today’s radiologist shortage, the growing need for specialized image interpretation and the challenges of reduced reimbursements.
